EXAM

The exam will be held Tuesday Oct. 25 in the room called 'Turing-129'. The exam will start at 10:00. More information, including the questions, are available under exam.

Course Description

Pervasive computing regards the introduction of interconnected computers into everyday situations, from embedded control systems to public healthcare.

We survey technical aspects of contemporary research in pervasive computing. Subjects include software development on mobile devices (i.e. mobile phones), software architectures for pervasive systems, new interaction models, mobile code and mobile agents in theory and in practice, and location and context-aware systems.

In addition, we give an introduction of the research currently being conducted at the Center for Pervasive Healthcare [www.pervasivehealthcare.dk].

Time and Place

Lectures: Mondays 12:15 - 15:00 @ Shannon 156

Lecturer

Course Material

The major part of the litterature covered in this course is available to the students in a compendium which can be bought in Stakbogladen at Ny Munkegade. The compendium will be available in week 35, when the course starts.

In addition to the compendium and the papers that is handed out in class, I can recommended the following book (also available at Stakladen at Ny Munkegade):

  • Pervasive Computing Handbook by Uwe Hansmann (Editor), Lothar Merk, Martin S. Nicklous, Thomas Stober
This book provides lots of useful, technical background material for the course, and we may use a bit of the material in the book as part of the lectures. A review made by Kjeld H. Mortensen in the 'Datalogbladet' is available here. Another review by Shiva Sastry in the IEEE Distributed Systems online publication is available here.
However, this book does not provide detailed information on the major topics of the course, and we will not base the course on it. It is my opinion that reading this book will help give you a better understanding of what pervasive computing is all about, but nonetheless you can easily follow the course without it. The book should probably be in stock locally by the time the semester starts.

News Group

The news group for the cource is daimi.pvc. This is used for announcements as well as for general discussions amongst us.

Evaluation

During the course you need to do a small, but mandatory, programming project, present it in class, and hand in a small report on it. The course will be finalized with a oral exam with internal examiners and graded according to the 13 scale. More information on the exam will follow.
